about
It is speculated that this carol was inspired by the Grail legend of the Fisher/Philosopher King.
The clue is in the line "orchard brown."
The Fisher King is the knight that protects The Holy Grail, and his legs have been perpetually wounded.
It is said that when the Knight suffered the wound, his lands withered with him to become a wasteland.
The words are taken from a Medieval Carol dating back to the 14th century, of which only the lyrics survived.
The music was adapted from a song setting by Benjamin Britten, as performed by Jeff Buckley.
lyrics
He bore him up, he bore him down,
He bore him into an orchard brown.
Lully, lullay, lully, lullay!
The falcon has borne my mate away.
In that orchard there was a hold
That was hanged with purple and gold;
And in that hold there was a bed:
It was hanged with gold so red;
Lully, lullay, lully, lullay!
The falcon has borne my mate away.
And in that bed there lies a knight,
His wounds bleeding day and night;
By that bedside kneels a maid,
And she weeps both night and day;
Lully, lullay, lully, lullay!
The falcon has borne my mate away.
And by that bed’s side there stands a stone,
“Corpus Christi” written thereon.
